Can I scale Cloudways Flexible back down after a traffic spike?

The short answer

For supported DigitalOcean configurations, a CPU/RAM-only upgrade can return to the original size, but not below it. If the upgrade also increases storage, reducing the server later requires cloning. The return path depends on the provider and the scaling option you use.

In more detail

For a short campaign, check the downgrade path before choosing the upgrade. Record the original size and separate the need for more CPU or memory from the need for more disk space. Scaling can interrupt availability, so allow for that in the campaign schedule.

Cloudways also distinguishes DigitalOcean servers created through the New Unified Experience: not all of their advanced scaling options are available in the Classic interface. Use the options and confirmation details for your actual server; other infrastructure providers have their own restrictions.

If a smaller server requires cloning, treat it as a move: check the copied settings, test the app and account for the new server address. Keep the original until the replacement works. These rules apply to Flexible cloud servers; Managed AI Agent has separate resizing documentation.
