How should I choose between Contabo Cloud VPS and Cloud VDS?
The short answer
Compare shared versus dedicated CPU allocation, not just the listed core count. Contabo Cloud VPS uses shared vCPUs; the Cloud VDS family targets dedicated resources. Start with a suitable configuration and upgrade when workload measurements justify it.
In more detail
Contabo Cloud VPS and Cloud VDS are both virtual server choices, but their CPU allocation differs. Cloud VPS is a shared-vCPU family, while VDS is positioned for dedicated resources. The useful question is whether your application needs sustained, predictable processing rather than occasional bursts of activity.
Our selection advice: for a personal site, development environment or modest service, first test a Cloud VPS configuration with adequate memory. For a busy database or continuously running worker, compare it with a VDS using the same application and data. Measure response times during busy periods, job completion time and memory pressure.
Do not assume that a higher CPU count solves every slowdown. Database queries, disk access and external services can be the real constraint. Paying for dedicated resources is easier to justify when you can connect the upgrade to a user-facing result or a shorter processing queue.
Include migration in the decision. Contabo's product documentation distinguishes upgrades within a family from moving between families; do not promise an in-place conversion without checking the current procedure. Keep a tested recovery copy and allow time to move the application before committing to a different plan family.
