Do I need a dedicated IP for HTTPS on InMotion shared hosting?

The short answer

Usually not for visitors using SNI-capable browsers. InMotion documents AutoSSL on a shared IP and warns about compatibility with browsers that lack SNI. Buy a dedicated IP for a concrete compatibility or application requirement, not merely because you want HTTPS.

In more detail

InMotion's AutoSSL guidance allows certificates to be used with a shared IP address. Its compatibility warning concerns browsers that do not support Server Name Indication, or SNI. This is the relevant distinction when deciding whether a dedicated address is necessary for the visitors you serve.

For a normal website project, our recommendation is to validate the actual HTTPS setup before adding an IP upgrade. Test the main domain and intended subdomains, check that the correct certificate appears, and verify that links and embedded assets use HTTPS. A dedicated address does not correct an incorrectly configured domain or a page that loads insecure resources.

If you support a controlled environment with older clients, document those clients and test them directly. Ask InMotion whether a dedicated IP resolves that specific compatibility issue and whether the proposed shared plan permits the needed configuration.

Also separate an IP address from server resources: purchasing an address does not by itself give the site a separate server. Choose Launch or Power based on the website's practical hosting needs, and add a dedicated IP only when you can identify the requirement it satisfies.
