How can I improve website response times for mainland China users?
The short answer
First check whether mainland hosting and its ICP requirements fit your business. Then compare actual access from the mainland networks your visitors use. A region name or a CN2 GIA label alone does not guarantee the lowest latency.
In more detail
For a website hosted in mainland China, verify ICP filing eligibility and the applicable requirements before buying hosting. An ICP filing and a commercial ICP licence are different: additional licensing can depend on the online service being provided. Alibaba Cloud’s Go China checklist explains this distinction.
Include suitable mainland regions in your shortlist when you can meet the relevant requirements. If considering Hong Kong or other locations outside mainland China, test cross-border access from your users’ actual networks before committing. Do not assume one network-route label will perform equally well for every visitor.
Use the same pages and application in each test, cover several mainland cities and network operators, and repeat during busy hours. Check response times, failed requests and access to third-party scripts or APIs. This gives a more useful basis for choosing hosting than an unsupported fixed latency claim.
