Domains

How should I manage renewal of an important domain at NameSilo?

The short answer

Use auto-renew with a working payment method and verify that renewal actually succeeded. Treat expiry as a service risk, not an extra payment window: recovery rules, fees and availability can change as a domain moves through the expiration process.

In more detail

NameSilo lets you enable or disable automatic renewal for individual domains. Its current policy says the first renewal attempt is made at the beginning of the month in which the domain expires. Check the selected payment method and confirmation instead of assuming a charge will happen only on the expiry date.

For a business domain, assign a renewal owner and keep an independent reminder before that month begins. Review the current renewal quote and make sure the account can fund it. After an attempted renewal, verify the new expiration date in the account and investigate any failure message promptly.

NameSilo's expiration policy describes stages including grace, auction, possible restoration and deletion, with exceptions for particular extensions. Restoration can cost more than an ordinary renewal, and recovery is not always available. Do not make a business continuity plan around the last possible recovery day.

When comparing registrars, include renewal visibility, payment controls and recovery procedures alongside registration price. For domains you intend to abandon, make that decision deliberately and check whether websites, mailboxes or account recovery addresses still depend on them before allowing them to expire.
